People face many temptations, especially in the area of moral purity. One of the most appealing lures to the fallen flesh is sexual lust. Pornography has become increasingly brazen, readily visible to the unguarded eye of one who is not even seeking it. It has become one of the most successful weapons against the child of God. Our church families are plagued with failed marriages as the enemy has rushed in to ruin the testimony of saints. There have been casualties from among public leaders, the least to be suspected of such moral sin. This all-too-common tragedy has burdened my heart to exhort and encourage men, in particular, to echo the call of the psalmist as he stood before his Lord and cried out, "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a steadfast spirit within me," Psalm 51.10. Sam Thorpe Jr.
Christians today are living in a culture of compromise and careless behavior. What was unthinkable for believers to practice in our father’s day is becoming normal in Christian circles today. Standards of holiness and moral purity have been challenged, and replaced with secular ideas such as “Situational Ethics” and self-serving attitudes that raise the importance of self-esteem. Work and life- style changes have redefined the family unit, contrary to God’s original design and plan for the home. Possessing things (materialism) has become the god of the present age, and the pursuit of wealth and pleasure have become the measure of success, while values of eternal importance are laid aside. The news media no longer reports the facts of the day’s events, but has become the herald of Humanism, as it twists the way we see our world, forming the secular agenda of the new age. The public school system no longer sees teaching reading, writing and arithmetic, as their primary role. Teachers are now schooled to be the social change agents of young, impressionable minds, freeing children from the “old fashioned” religious thinking of their parents. Our churches have slipped into a mire of confusion and disorder, as they have strayed ever so gradually from the Word of God and assumed the role of Sunday entertainment, appealing to the senses of mankind, rather than the heart. All of these issues are like icebergs, exposing their shiny tips on the horizon of our culture, while looming with dangerous depths unseen to the average eye.
The field of technology has exploded in our lifetime, offering many attractive and intriguing products and services, while promoting the growth and acceptance of evil in our society. Many of the hi-tech inventions are not always bad, and can be used for God’s eternal purposes. However, Satan has quickly used these tools of information, with all the forces of evil, to send his fiery darts of poison, directly into our minds and hearts. His ways have slowly dulled the conscience of the believer.
Today people face many temptations especially in the area of moral purity. One of the most appealing devices to the fallen flesh of mankind is sexual lust. Pornography has become more available to the unguarded eye, as we move about in the normal course of life. It has become one of the most successful weapons used against the child of God. Our church families are stained with failed marriages, as the enemy has rushed in to ruin the testimony of saints. Many were public leaders, who were the last to be suspected of such moral sin. This all-too-common tragedy has burdened my heart to exhort and encourage men, in particular, to answer the call of the psalmist, as he stands before his Lord and cries out, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)
The fidelity of the marriage bond remains only as strong as the pure thoughts of our mind. The thought life of the believer must be self-disciplined, and with the help of the Holy Spirit controlling our spirit, our conscience before man and God can be clear of guilt and the stains of lust, which eat away the mind like a cancer. We will learn what God expects of men today, in an evil culture of wickedness, set before our eyes. Christ himself was burden on our behalf over this very real issue, and He prayed to His Father in this way: “And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;” John 17:13-20. With such an Advocate and faithful High Priest as Jesus Christ our Lord, we can be “overcomers” and go on as faithful husbands and Godly leaders, vessels fit for the Masters use.
