Jean était un jeune homme lorsqu'il rencontra le Seigneur Jésus. Certains pensent qu'il était le plus jeune des douze disciples. Son père Zébédée était un pêcheur aisé qui avait beaucoup de seccès. Jean et son frère Jacques étaient occupés à la pêche avec leur père. Leur mère s'appelait Salomé ou Marie (Matthieu 27.56 et March 15.40). Ils habitaient probablement à Bethsaïda dans le même lieu que Pierre et André, (Luc5.10; Jean 1.44).
Le nom Jude tire son origine grecque du nom Judas, mais à l'origine, il s'agit du nom hébreu Jude, signifiant louange. Il y a au moins trois hommes qui portent le nom de Judas ou Jude dans le Nouveau Testament: 1. Judas l'apôtre, 2 Jude, fils de Joseph de Marie, et 3. Jude Barsabas, un dirigeant de l'Eglise primitive. Le Jude qui a écrit cette lettre nous dit qu'il est le frère de Jacques. Ainsi, nous croyons qu'il est le fils de Joseph et Marie, Matthieu 13.55.
